Main Auditorium

The recent establishment of the Western Delta University Mentor/Mentee Programme marks a pivotal step towards fostering a culture of guidance and support within our academic community. Inaugurated with a training session aimed at empowering mentors with the tools necessary for effective mentorship, this initiative is poised to redefine the student experience at our esteemed institution.

On Wednesday, 24th April 2024, the School's main auditorium buzzed with anticipation as distinguished guests and members of our academic fraternity gathered for this significant event. The proceedings commenced with the introduction of dignitaries, setting the stage for an enlightening discourse on the pivotal role of mentorship in shaping the academic and personal trajectories of our students.

Addressing the audience, our esteemed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe, underscored the profound influence mentors wield in guiding and nurturing the talents and character of our student body. Drawing from his wealth of experience, he emphasized the symbiotic relationship between mentors and mentees, essential for fostering holistic growth and success.

Adding depth to the discussion, we were honored to have Prof. Margaret Abikwi from Benson Idahosa University as our guest lecturer and chief Guidance Counselor. Prof. Abikwi eloquently delineated the essence of mentorship, defining mentors as catalysts who unearth and cultivate the latent potential within individuals. Her insights illuminated the various mentoring techniques, ranging from one-on-one sessions to electronic platforms, each tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students.

Highlighting the virtues underpinning effective mentorship, Prof. Abikwi emphasized the importance of positive and ethical conduct, citing respect, trustworthiness, integrity, and responsibility as guiding principles. She deftly navigated through the challenges inherent in mentoring, juxtaposing them with the myriad benefits, including increased student persistence, alumni engagement, and overall academic success.

The session was not merely a monologue but a dynamic exchange of ideas, as attendees engaged in a spirited question and answer segment. Dr. (Mrs.) Ihayere extended heartfelt gratitude to all participants, underscoring the collective commitment to nurturing a vibrant mentoring culture within our institution.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Henry Oghoator echoed the sentiment of collective responsibility, urging all academic staff and management to embrace their roles as mentors with zeal and dedication.

The inauguration and training of Western Delta University Mentors represent a pivotal milestone in our journey towards academic excellence and holistic student development. As we embark on this transformative endeavor, let us uphold the values of mentorship with unwavering dedication, ensuring that every student's journey is marked by guidance, support, and empowerment.
