B.Sc. Mass Communication


The Department of Mass Communication offers a four (4) year degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication. This department is housed in the College of Social and Management Sciences.


To produce graduates who are familiar with the cardinal components of the information network which are deemed necessary for a good understanding of administration of the complex nature of modern societies and the intriguing human beings within the societies.


The mission of the Department is to educate and equip students with critical knowledge and skills of communication, information generation, film and movie making and analysis, news and multimedia technologies, socio-cultural and ethical information dissemination; that would empower them to contribute meaningfully to the global development.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Mass Communication provides critical know-ledge and skills useful for a range of careers including journalism, arts administration, advertising and the media in general. Such graduates also have ample opportunities in self-employment.

Philosophy, Aims and Objectives of the Programme

The philosophy, aims and objectives of Mass Communication include but not limited to the following:

  1. To offer an undergraduate professionally oriented programme for the aspiring Nigerian Journalists, Communicators, Broadcasters, Public Relations and Advertising Practitioners.
  2. To train and / or retrain Nigerian Journalists, Broad-casters, Communicators, Public Relations and Advertising Practitioners for leadership positions in the mass media organizations in Nigeria and the world.
  3. To raise and sustain the professional status of Journalism in Nigeria.
  4. To bridge the divergent perspective of News gathering and dissemination.
  5. To provide the Mass Communication students with the opportunity to master the art of communicating with the masses that transcends all disciplines, whether in writing or broadcasting for an on-line website at 9.00pm daily. Newscast or writing a speech for the Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or writing Advertising or Public Relations copy to sell or promote a product to the masses.
  6. To instil in the mass communication students, the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure.
  7. To train and encourage Nigerian Mass Communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively and WRITE OR BROADCAST concisely to the mass audience.
  8. To train Nigerian media men and women that would act as the trustees of the public trust and that would be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues.
  9. To produce Nigerian Mass Communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO KNOW as the fourth branch of government or Fourth Estate of the Realm.
  10. It is expected that at the end of the degree programme in Mass Communication, the mass communication graduate should be able to differentiate “Soft News from “Hard News”, Truth from Falsehood, and responsible Journalism from irresponsible Journalism.
  11. At the end of the degree programme in Mass Communication; it is expected that the graduate should be equipped enough to establish his/her own News-papers, Magazine, Public Relations and Advertising Agencies, or even his/her own radio and or/television station.

Degree Requirements:

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication is designed to expose students, in the first two years, to the general principles and practices of Journalism, Broadcasting, Advertising, Public Relations and other related fields in the wide spectrum of the information industry. Some measure of Specialization commences in the third year and intensifies in the fourth year.

Admission and Graduation Requirements Admission


A minimum of five (5) credits in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination or in the General Certificate Examination G.C.E. ‘L’ Level, or NECO. The subjects should include English Language, Literature in English, Government or History, Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) or Islamic Religious Knowledge (IRK) and Economics. At least a pass in Mathematics is required and must be obtained in not more than two sittings. AN acceptable UME score is also required.

Direct Entry

Direct entry candidates must meet the University Matriculation requirements. To be qualified, candidates must obtain the professional Diploma in Mass Communication, Film Studies and Media related courses of any university or polytechnic as approved by the Senate of the University.
